For whatever reason, this Friday we’ve opted for the other side of soul, leaning heavily into jazz, with hip‑hop claiming its own place right in the middle of it all. Soul alternatives, plus an overflow of sheer sonic beauty. No doubt there’s no getting around the third album by the man who calls himself CORTO.ALTO, and who, under that name, blows open the borders of jazz on a grand scale. Or dreams up fusions in which jazz still plays its part. His “Some Small Fortune” is a 15‑part sound adventure, full of fabulous string arrangements and fabulous guests in every imaginable combination, keeping us constantly charged — SHOLTO’s music is a permanent fixture for us. Beauty with backbone. “Always” is his new single, with PHOEBE COCO as guest. Gorgeous. EDBL, both with his own songs and as a producer, remains a sure bet for quality at the crossroads of new soul, crackling hip‑hop, and some kind of jazz. Fine melodies come as a bonus — just listen to “Wish You Were Mine,” recorded together with ADY SULEIMAN and DAN WHITLAM. Moving in similar terrain is AUGUST CHARLES. “To Be Alive” is the name of his current EP, and “Started With A Dream” is the perfect summary of Mr. Charles’ musical spectrum.
