Like Olive Jones, who has been wrapping us around her finger for some time now with her style and voice. Okay, at first she may not necessarily appear as a typical SonicSoul candidate, but anyone who enjoys perfectly crafted songs with a warming atmosphere will hardly be able to ignore her debut “For Mary.” Sounds for grown-ups, who within these singer-songwriter settings will naturally also discover sparks of jazz and soul.
A different tone comes from Charlotte Colace, a singer with Franco-Cuban roots who lives in Berlin. Her debut EP “No Way But Through” brings us five rough-edged songs (plus a trio interlude) whose fascination is impossible to escape. Direct and reduced to the essential tone. The same can be said of the debut by Lo Steele from Portland. Together with guitarist Charlie Hunter and his hybrid guitar, drummer Marcus Finnie, and carefully selected guests, “Only a Drop” delivers a soul-jazz-blues-gospel revue rooted firmly in several traditions, performed at the highest level. A wonderful voice, precise musicianship, and a rich repertoire of songs. Absolutely timeless!
A label that, of course, applies especially to Asha Puthli. From free jazz to Italo-disco, plus films ranging from James Ivory to Bruno Corbucci. Recently Asha has stepped back into the spotlight, and now with “Pawa!” there’s an ultra-light, breezy piece of disco dance recorded together with the Say She She trio. Once it starts, there’s simply no holding back! 🎶
