Fresh off the press: the new single from MAMAS GUN, for example. Naturally with that certain something extra. Jazz and soul and pop, and somewhere in there also a fine feel for funk. The melody works, the production is perfectly cushioned, and on top of that there’s a subtle hint of Steely Dan rising up from below. Contributing musician Brian Jackson keeps a low profile, but to great effect.
Of course, this is no comparison to his own new single, once again recorded in close collaboration with MASTERS AT WORK. A very lively version of the Gil Scott-Heron classic “Lady Day…”, which also features one of RAHSAAN PATTERSON’s rare guest appearances. The archive is always well stocked — and, moreover, consistently guided by a knack for giving the “right” classic a fresh coat of paint.
After his recently released “Rare Groove Spectrum Vol. 3”, LANCE ARMSTRONG already has another ace up his sleeve. “Cold Bear” (originally by The Gaturs) fits the current big-picture climate perfectly and willingly cranks up the heat.
Cut from similar cloth, yet entirely different, is NICK MARKS. He manages to give his soul-jazz-funk gumbo “Oui Chef!” a few decisive extra edges and corners along the way. One that can be rediscovered again and again.
