Between this and that. And between lively rhythms and the valley of entangling eyes. Or something like that. A wide field. And it’s summer. And for the “Summer Nights,” which also take place regularly during this season, DANA AND ALDEN have put their very own jazz fantasies on pleasantly easy rails. Behind the scenes of a catchy pop‑soul number, it remains jazz, they say. – Onward. Because THANDII and REGALADO are waiting here. The latter being the most famous drummer in the Philippines, now giving the British duo a bit of extra drive. “Coco Okayo” brings the great bass, a solidly knitted get‑involved groove, and a little more. “Love me or love me not!” — A new album by NAO YOSHIOKA. „Self „offers plenty of sharply executed R&B, almost too flawless. But with an illustrious guest list (Devin Morrison, Braxton Cooke, Bnnyhunna, Jamila Woods, Bilal, Sam Wills, Keyon Harrold, etc.), who—as usual—pass the handle of the Yoshioka studio door from one to the next. Also on board: the Finnish duo MISHA and JUSSI HALME, who cleverly slowed down the tempo for their “Inner Universe” contribution, and then provided the perfect stage for Taiwanese jazz vibraphonist CHIEN CHIEN LU. – ASAGAYA is actually David Kern. A Frenchman with various musical abilities — and the freedom to let his ideas run wild. We won’t get tangled up in interpretations now, but instead give precedence to the soulful voice of HANNAH WILLIAMS, who delivers the excitingly staged story of the “Valley Of Tangled Eyes.”

Zwischen diesem und jenem. Und flotten Rhythmen und dem Tal der verfangender Augen. Oder so. Ein weites Feld. Und es ist Sommer. Und für die in dieser Zeit ebenfalls regelmäßig stattfindenden „Summer Nights“ haben DANA AND ALDEN ihre ganz eigenen Jazz-Fantasien auf ganz lockere Schienen gestellt. Hinter den Kulissen einer eingängigen Pop-Soul Nummer bleibt’s beim Jazz, sagt man. – Weiter im Text. Denn hier warten THANDII und der REGALADO. Letzterer der bekannteste Schlagzeuger der Philippinen, der nun dem britischen Duo ein wenig die Sporen gibt. „Coco Okayo“ bringt den tollen Bass, einen solide gestrickten Mitmach-Groove und ein wenig mehr. „Love me or love me not!“ – Neues Album von NAO YOSHIOKA. „Self hat reichlich von auf den Punkt gespieltem R&B, fast schon zu fehlerfrei. Dafür mit illustrer Gästeschar (Devin Morrison, Braxton Cooke, Bnnyhunna, Jamila Woods, Bilal, Sam Wills, Keyon Harrold etc.), die sich wie gewohnt die Klinke der Yoshioka-Studiotür in die Hand gibt. Franzose mit diversen musikalischen Fähigkeiten. Und den Möglichkeiten seinen Ideen freien Lauf zu laufen. Wir werden uns jetzt nicht in irgendwelchen Deutungen verstricken, sondern lassen der Soul-Stimme von HANNAH WILLIAMS den Vortritt, um die spannend inszenierte Story vom „Valley Of Tangled Eyes“ zum Besten zu geben.

„Hello Hi“, direct and unfiltered from Ellie Harris. Jazz, naturally enriched with a well‑measured dose of soul – plus a song like a roller‑coaster ride and a performance that rushes through the SonicSoul editorial room in truly remarkable fashion. A terrific start into the weekend. – We’re still living off that wonderful collaborative EP that Jordan Rakei seemingly put in the shop window only a few weeks ago. And already the story continues – “Enemies” opens the door to an album called “A Safe Place To Be Wild”, which will cause a stir at Blue Note from October 30 onward. Jordan in the elevated singer‑songwriter‑pop‑soul‑or‑something segment. Naturally executed superbly, and with a few cheerful la‑la‑la’s it hits the mark with ease. – Among our sure candidates, of course, is Yazmin Lacey, who somehow dances her way through the “Summer Haze”. A pleasant groove with a world‑music foundation, plus a melody that simply cannot be denied entry. – “A psych odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non‑traditional fashion.” That’s Ghost Funk Orchestra in words. With the towering “Ocotillo”, Seth Applebaum and his loyal crew turn those words into action. Jazz, funk, soul – like a story being played out, one the listeners are invited to crystallize for themselves. Exciting right to the end.

„Hello Hi“, direkt und unvermittelt von ELLIE HARRIS. Jazz, selbstverständlich ergänzt mit einer wohldosierten Portion Soul – dazu ein Song wie eine Achterbahnfahrt und eine Performance, die rundum bemerkenswert durch den SonicSoul Redaktionsraum rauscht. Tooler Einstieg ins Wochenende. – Wir zehren noch von der wunderbaren Kollabo-EP, die der JORDAN RAKEI gefühlt erst vor ein paar Wochen ins Fenster gestellt hat. Und schon geht’s weiter im Text – „Enemies“ gibt den Einstieg in ein Album namens „A Safe Place To Be Wild“, das ab dem 30.10. bei Blue Note für Furore sorgen wird. Der Jordan im gehobenen Singer-Songrwriter-Pop-Soul-Oder-So Segment. Selbstverständlich superb umgesetzt, und mit ein paar frohgemuten „LaLaLa’s“ ganz sicher im Ziel. – Zu unseren sicheren Kandidat:innen zählt natürlich aich die YAZMIN LACEY, die sich irgendwie durch den „Summer haze“ durch tanzt. Netter Groove auf World-Basis, dazu eine Melodie, der der Eintritt nicht verwehrt werden kann. – “A psych odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non-traditional fashion”. Das GHOST FUNK ORCHESTRA in Worten. Mittels der hochwachsenden „Ocotillo“ lassen Seth Applebaum, und seine Getreuen den Worten Taten folgen. Jazz, Funk, Soul – wie eine gespielte Story, die sich die Hörerschar gern selbst herauskristallisieren darf. Spannend bis zum Schluss.

Top! – JACK PAGE lays down a relaxed “Summertime” beat on the floor — perfectly tuned, with fresh soul and an essential infusion of jazz. Usually effective. At least for us. – ANAIIS follows in her familiar quality. Influenced by the whole world, naturally balanced as it should be. Endless “Sunshine.” – AUDREY POWNE, preparing for a new album whose early signals already demand full attention. “Swollen” arrives with a tight groove, jagged drum textures, and a clear commitment to jazz — but in her very own way. – And when even SIPPRELL, filled to the brim with “Energy,” gives herself over to the joys of dance beats, we know it’s time to simply follow our own steps.

FRIDAY’S MUSIC mit MOSES BOYD „Say Yeah“ HATTIE ROSE „Did I Do Too Much?“ – ISABELLE METTLE „Good In Me“ – FKJ „Changes Rising“

More than enough. And filled to the brim with positive thoughts. To keep everything consistently filtered toward the bright side, we’ve put together another wonderful quartet of music today. – Together with drummer and producer MOSES BOYD, we sway left and right, while wholeheartedly falling into a many‑voiced “Say Yeah.” Soul and jazz on a modern gospel level. – “Did I Do Too Much?” A good question—one that, in HATTIE ROSE’s case, should clearly and decisively be answered with “No.” No doubt: with this finely crafted soul‑pop‑funk piece, she has us firmly on her side—and the Bill Withers touch adds its own pleasant charm. –ISABELLE METTLE is also talked about far too little. Yet “Good In Me” delivers sustainably good feelings: alternative soul lines with the right essential ingredients and cleverly placed hooks and quirks. – And now a few refreshing notes from FKJ, who continues to put distance between himself and the “New French House” label with “Changes Rising.” And succeeds. A comfortable beat with gentle head‑nod quality, paired with well‑tempered sounds & visions. The album “Tyber” arrives on 11 September.

Mehr als genug. Obendrein auch noch voll mit positiven Gedanken. Damit wir konsequent ausblenden, haben wir heute wieder ein wunderbares Musik-Quartett auf die Beine gestellt. Gemeinsam mit Schlagzeuger und Produzent MOSES BOYD schwenken wir hin, und schwenken wir her, während wir mit Inbrunst in ein vielstimmiges „Say Yeah“ verfallen. Soul und Jazz auf moderner Gospel-Ebene. – „Did I Do Too Much?“ Gute Frage, die im Fall von HATTIE ROSE natürlich mit einem deutlich-klaren „Nein“ beantwortet werden sollte. Keine Frage, mit dem ausgeklügelten Soul-Pop-Funker hat sie uns klar auf ihrer Seite – der Bill-Withers-Anklang tut zudem seine angenehme Wirkung. – Auch über ISABELLE METTLE wird gemeinhin zu wenig gesprochen. Dabei sorgt auch „Good In Me“ für nachhaltig-gute Gefühle, alternative Soul-Linien, mit den wichtig-richtigen Zutaten und geschickt gesetzten Haken und Ösen. – Jetzt noch ein paar erfrischende Noten vom FKJ, der mittels „Changes Rising“ weiterhin Abstand zu seinem „New French House“ Stempel sucht. Und findet. Bequemer Beat in sanftmütige Kopfnicker-Qualität, dazu wohltemperierte Sounds & Visions. Album kommt als „Tyber“ am 11.09. zu uns.

Variations of soul—with jazz, and with alternative musical structures. Sounds like an adventure, and that’s exactly what it should be. Word has it that new albums/EPs from SOMI, HELENA CASELLA, and CALIDA RAY are headed our way. And while we welcome them with open ears already today, TANYA NOLAN makes the impossible possible: “Impossible” is thoroughly soothing Soul‑RnB‑jazz essential listening.

Immer noch mittendrin. Und neue Musik gibt’s obendrein. Während wir gestern erst das hohe Lied der Soul-Tradition angestimmt haben, verlegen wir uns heute auf die gewagteren Songs zum Thema.
